Reid May Reveal Bill By Friday
For over a month now, we have been extensively covering the progress of healthcare reform through the House and Senate. As this quote from the New York Times blog puts it:
The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, hopes to finalize the Senate version of major health care legislation this week.
But don’t count the days. Mr. Reid and his aides have been saying the same thing for a month, ever since the Senate Finance Committee approved its bill on Oct. 13.
But at least now we have something substantive (sort of). Reid apparently has a final bill and is simply waiting for the Congressional Budget Office to finish their cost analysis. A procedural vote could be held as soon as Friday of this week.
The public support for reform is waning, and this threatens the fragile 60 vote Democratic coalition. It remains unlikely that Democrats will be able to invoke cloture on a filibuster, which is bad news for healthcare reform. This would be a breath of fresh air for any health insurance company – perhaps now is the time to buy.
