Two Profitable Obama Sectors

An important thing to remember now that election season is over is that regardless of who you may have supported, it’s imperative now to keep politics out of the picture. The focus here is now entirely on policy and the market’s response. Keeping your own stocks in line with the new administration’s policies takes precedence over any lingering fears or bitterness over the election’s outcome.

Mark Manning of Real Money [subscription required] agrees with this philosophy, and in view of Obama’s win he has pinpointed a couple sectors that may be particularly profitable in the months to come.

He describes Obama’s free-market approach to emissions control — auctioning emission permits. He writes as follows:

The problem is that Obama’s approach will be a huge disadvantage to utilities and other carbon-emitting businesses because of the massive addition of new costs. In fact, Obama stated that new coal-fired power plants would become hopelessly uneconomic under his plan because of the costs of emissions permits these companies would need. Because of the lack of clarity on these energy issues, one can’t determine if this will benefit nuclear facilities, but that seems like a high possibility to me. Solar, wind and other alternative energy sources should also do well.

Manning notes that this will be very costly for “new coal-fired power plants” and other utilities that leave a big carbon footprint (EXC, ED, and DUK; for instance). Conversely, alternative energy sectors and quite possibly nuclear facilities can be expected to do well. FSLR is a great buy for solar energy in particular.

Manning also wrote that Obama’s state healthcare system, though sketchy on details at the moment, would be good for “producers of generic drugs” such as TEVA, SCR, and CPD; as well as the makers of pediatric healthcare products.
