McCain and the Dalai Lama
All the recent news seems to be about Obama’s trip to Europe, so jumping off the Obama love train, we are going to report on McCain’s recent meeting with the Dalai Lama. If you haven’t heard, McCain and the Dalai Lama meet in the US on Friday.
After McCain expressed his concerns over China’s mistreatment of Tibetans, and the Dalai Lama viewed this as genuine concerned for human rights, expressing his support for McCain. China’s government was not nearly as ecstatic, however.
We urge relevant Americans to conform to the basic standard of international relations and realize the fact that the Dalai is trying to split China and undermine the social order of Tibet and the ethnic unity under the cover of religion
Said China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Liu Jianchao. This seems like a misstep for McCain. China, or any country for that matter, hates it when outsiders try to use religious figures to influence internal affairs, such as the tensions in Tibet. And despite the fact that the Dalai Lama praised McCain, he did not give an official endorsement.
So maybe it’s a good thing that McCain is flying under the media radar right now. This episode shows a major foreign policy mistake.
