McCain and the Latino Vote
This article in Real Clear Politics identifies the moral struggles of working class people: i.e., they adhere to a strict ethical code when faced with economic hardship.
In general, Latin American people, governments, and leaders are leaning right on the political spectrum (especially when you consider their prominent Catholicism). Therefore, in Southwestern USA, one would be hard pressed to walk down the street without coming across one of the economically liberal, socially conservative Latino voters. So how can McCain appeal to this group in order to win his home state and the Southwest region in the fall?
Well, his understanding in regards to illegal immigration is a good start. As the Real Clear Politics article states: “The working classes are pressed harder by the presence of illegal immigrants, in ways that typically don’t affect academics, media types or affluent suburbanites.” If McCain can play up his role as a Southwestern Governor and the Republican spin-machine can keep Obama looking like a liberal elitist – he just might have it made.
