Nothing Like A Bad Economy
There’s nothing like a bad economy to cause the average voter to take an interest in the economy. In fact, a recent poll shows that the economy has surpassed the war in Iraq as the most important issue to American voters. But what does that mean for our candidates?
The article that we linked to above suggests that this bodes well for Obama, as voters tend to favor the out of power party when the economy is bad. We would have to agree with them. Especially because McCain is still viewed as too similar to Bush by 49% of Americans.
While it’s a good thing that Americans are taking an interest in the economy, this is the kind of mindset that could easily lead to support for ridiculous proposals like corn ethanol or a gas tax holiday.
Anyway, the point is that an increased interest in the economy is a good thing until people start to panic. What we should do is look at the candidate’s long-term solutions as opposed to their short-term band-aids.
