Fastest Train In The World

Recently it seems like infrastructure has been thrust into the spotlight, with roads in disrepair and inadequate levees leading to terrible flooding. The Angry Bear blog commented on this phenomenon the other day. They mentioned some of the key politicians who are pushing the issue, and also mentioned a nice definition of infrastructure from Mostly Economics.
So how do our candidates stand on this issue? The article that the Angry Bear cites has some great information about Obama’s views. Obama is heavily supportive of increasing infrastructure projects, especially those involving public transportation. Obama even said in a speech to the U.S. Mayors Association, “…I don’t want to see the fastest train in the world built halfway around the world in Shanghai, I want to see it built right here in the United States of America.”
The article also mentions Obama’s belief that there should be more privatization of public transport. This could be a saving grace for the hurting train companies such as CSX (CSX), Union Pacific (UNP), and Northfolk Southern (NSC). Besides just public transport, Obama seems to be for the privatization of other aspects of infrastructure, which could help a vast range of industries including construction, steel, and as always alternative energy.
McCain on the other hand hasn’t jumped on the bandwagon yet. He has yet to release a comprehensive policy or even simply acknowledge that this is a major issue. However a quick check of his page on OnTheIssues.org reveals a little insight. For example he said he would veto any bill with pork barrels and use that money instead for repairs. He also voted against increased government funding of Amtrak.
If the Angry Bear is right and this becomes a major issue, you can expect that McCain will release a more detailed policy. For now hopefully the little information we managed to dredge up can help at least a little.

Slow and steady for infrastructure. You ought to see Bruce Webb’s proposal to use the Soc Sec surplus for infrastructure.
Let me know when McCain jumps on. Thanks.
